Exploring Chicago's North Shore is a breeze!

 

Area MapChicago's North Shore is only 30 minutes from O'Hare International Airport and easily accessible from downtown Chicago, Midway Airport, Palwaukee Airport as well as by Amtrak, and the many rail and bus service providers in the Chicago Metropolitan area. Maps on this page allow you to view estimated travel times in the region, an overview of area with major highway routes and maps of the individual communities on the North Shore.

Once here, there are numerous ways to explore the North Shore's magnificent surroundings. If you enjoy driving on your own, several local car rental companies service the North Shore as well as a fleet of clean, safe taxicabs and numerous limousine companies with friendly, knowledgeable chauffeurs on staff. And, if public transportation is more your speed, you're sure to find the North Shore's affordable bus and train services easy to navigate and the finest in the country!

Airports

O'Hare International Airport

O'Hare International Airport handles more passengers than any other airport in the world. For visitors needing information or directions, airport information booths are located on the lower levels of the domestic terminals and on the upper and lower levels of the International Terminal. A foreign currency exchange is located on the lower level of the International Terminal. O'Hare is about 30 minutes from most North Shore communities.

Midway International Airport

Midway Airport is located on the south side of Chicago and is approximately one hour from most North Shore communities. The airport is divided into three terminals, A, B and C and is home to many low-cost carriers. The main lobby at the airport's center entrance is where the information booth and all vehicle pick-up services are available.

Traveling By Car

 

Evanston, Skokie, Wilmette and Northbrook are all accessible from the Edens Expressway (I-94). Evanston and Wilmette may also be reached from downtown Chicago via Lake Shore Drive and Sheridan Road. Ample parking is available in all cities. Most parking is free except for downtown areas that have parking meters. Evanston has parking garages in the downtown area with variable fees. Easy Public Transportation to and from Chicago

Chicago Transit Authority
Chicago rapid transit "L" and bus service

Chicago's North Shore is served by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) bus and rapid transit "L" and by Pace suburban buses. CTA "L" trains reach Evanston, Skokie and Wilmette directly.

Chicago's North Shore is served by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) bus and rapid transit "L" and by Pace suburban buses.

Evanston & Wilmette
The Purple Line has direct access to downtown Chicago in a little over a half hour via the express rush hour trains (5:30-9:30 am & 2:45-6:30 pm) weekdays. All other times during the day and on weekends and holidays, the Purple Line runs to Howard Street where it meets the Red Line with continuing service to Wrigley Field, Lincoln Park, downtown Chicago, Chinatown and U.S. Cellular Field. During non-rush hour times the ride is approximately 40 minutes.

Skokie
The Yellow Line services Skokie and operates weekdays 5 am-10 pm. The Yellow Line can be accessed from downtown Chicago by taking the Red Line until its end at Howard Street and transferring to the Yellow Line. The ride on the Yellow Line is only 8 minutes in length. Downtown Chicago is accessible in a little over 40 minutes. Pace buses are available at the Howard (where Purple, Red and Yellow lines meet) and Skokie stations to hundreds of specific destinations on the North Shore.

Metra
Suburban Commuter Rail Service

Metra is the premier commuter rail system serving northeast Illinois. With 228 stations in the six-county area of northeast Illinois, Metra makes traveling to and from downtown Chicago and its surrounding areas easy and convenient. The following North Shore communities are serviced by Metra:

Evanston & Wilmette
Evanston and Wilmette are serviced by Metra's Union Pacific North Line which leaves/arrives at downtown Chicago's Ogilvie Transportation Center (Madison and Canal Streets. in the Loop) and leaves/arrives in the heart of both downtown Evanston and Wilmette. Trains run daily and the ride is a half hour. During the week, service runs at least every half hour; more frequent during rush hours. During the weekend, service is available at least hourly.

Northbrook
Northbrook is serviced by the Milwaukee District North Line which leaves/arrives at downtown Chicago's Union Station (Canal St. between Adams and Jackson Blvd in the Loop). Trains run daily with service every half hour weekday during rush hours, hourly during non-rush hours weekdays and service every two hours during the weekend. The ride is 45 minutes.
