The Holocaust Memorial Foundation of Illinois will break ground for the new Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center in Skokie on Thursday, June 22 at 10:30am. The state-of-the-art facility will be dedicated to education, recording, remembering the Holocaust. Parking will not be permitted at the Musuem site. Reserved Parking will be available in the East Parking Lot of Westfield Old Orchard (near Maggiano's Little Italy). For the past 47 years, the Brandeis Used Book Sale has become a North Shore summer tradition. Since 1958, members of the North Shore Chapter of the Brandeis University National Women's Committee have set up tents and sold used books to raise money for the libraries at Brandeis University. This year, the book sale (which has grown to become the largest outdoor book sale in the world, featuring more than 350,000 books in 35,000 square feet of tent space) returns to Westfield Old Orchard for its FINAL sale. The Chicago Botanic Garden's annual Carillon Concert Series kicks off this month with a wonderful line-up of free tours and music every Monday from June 5 through August 28 (tours begin at 5:30, concerts at 7:00). The carillon has become a noted landmark and a beloved icon with Garden visitors since 1986. Crafted in Holland, the tower's bronze bells and playing device has a range of four octaves...the majestic beauty of carillon bells on a warm summer evening is one of the loveliest sounds heard throughout the Garden!
Also starting this month, the Chicago Botanic Garden presents its Great Chefs Series! Centered in the Regenstein Fruit & Vegetable Garden's open-air amphitheater, the Great Chef Series features noted chefs preparing recipes and giving cooking demonstrations using delicious garden-fresh ingredients. The series is free and takes place every Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. through October 8. This year's chef lineup includes Ramiro Velasquez of Carlos', Amalea Tshilds of Lula Café, Joel Nickson of Wishbone, and Herb Fingerhut of Red Hen Bread. Sherman Plaza Self Park is now open to the public and will offer free parking for the first month! City officials want to
express appreciation to community members for their patience during the
project's two years of demolition and construction and invite residents
and visitors to become acquainted with the new parking facility.
Complementary parking will continue through midnight July 4 for the
holiday. Parkers should initially use the Davis Street entrance.

One Sunday per Month through October

The Skokie Northshore Sculpture Park announces a new series of guided tours that are free and open to the public. One Sunday each month, now through October (weather permitting), trained volunteer docents will lead informal and informative walking tours in the park. Adults and families will learn about a selection of the park's over 70 large-scale, contemporary sculptures, the creative entities and forces behind the works and the history and genesis of the Sculpture Park. Participation Boosts Awareness for Chicago's North Shore
Last month Anandini Sekhar, Tourism Marketing Manager for Chicago's North Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau, attended the annual International Pow Wow event which took place in Orlando. This very important trade show, hosted by the Travel Industry Association of America, was an incredible opportunity to meet face-to-face with thousands of travel industry VIPs and buyers who are the key decision makers. Anandini was part of the Illinois delegation hoping to attract even more visitors to the state and to our region. She was very pleased with the results, the contacts she made, and the genuine interest people showed in learning more about visiting Chicago's North Shore.
