It's Thursday - Let's Dance!

Now in its 16th year, It's Thursday, Let's Dance! will once again be heating up downtown Evanston on Thursday nights through August 6th. Each week, the public is invited to dance to the music of a live band from 7 to 9 pm at the only outdoor dance floor north of Chicago! Different dance styles and music are featured each Thursday including R&B, Latin, Blues, Big Band and rock/pop classics. Upcoming bands include the Stardust Big Band (July 9), the acoustic Beatles tribute band Kaleidoscope Eyes (July 16), Rio Bamba Brazilian and American Jazz (July 23), Decoy Prayer Meeting (July 30) and the Sam Fazio Quartet (August 6). It's Thursday, Let's Dance is a free event, and all ages are welcome. Get your dancing shoes on and c'mon out for a great time on the dance floor! For more information, click here.

Rock-N-Run the Runway!

Independence Day will be like no other if you celebrate it with friends and family at Rock-N-Run the Runway! Hosted by the Village of Wheeling and the City of Mt Prospect, the festivities begin at 8 am with a 5K run and a 1 mile walk on the main runway and taxiways of the Chicago Executive Airport! All proceeds from the race will benefit the scholarship fund of the Chicago Executive Pilots Association. At 5 pm, the gates to the airport re-open for a high-energy celebration with several live bands, a DJ, food trucks, restaurant vendors, a beer tent, and fireworks (starting at 9:15). Come along for the ride this summer as Evanston Subaru in Skokie presents Friday Night Car Tunes at the Gazebo with free entertainment for the entire family! Enjoy a variety of live music each Friday night from 6 to 8 pm while discovering the beauty and history of classic cars, hotrods, muscle vehicles, and vintage automobiles. Mix and mingle around the neighborhood and get to know the businesses and conveniences that downtown Skokie has to offer! July's live music line-up includes The Wind Gypsys (July 3), The Skokie String Trio (July 10), Top Note Music Academy (July 17), Lake Effect Clarinet Quartet along with the Dance & Music Academy (July 24) and Rellevent featuring Skokie Idol, Turrell Brown (July 31). Downtown Evanston Walking Tour - Wed, September 16
Walking and bike tours of Evanston's most notable places have been planned by Design Evanston, all of which highlight several of the locations that are featured in the book, "Evanston: 150 Years 150 Places." Published by Design Evanston in 2013, the books (which are $15 each) will be available at the end of each tour along with some light refreshments. All tours will last approximately 1.5 hours and will be led by the book's four authors for an insider's look at Evanston's celebrated architecture. The cost for the bike tour is $10 per person, and the walking tour is $20. Tours are limited to only 20 people. Reservations are required. For more information, click here.

Celebrate the joys of summer at the Evanston History Center's Annual Ice Cream Social from 1 to 4pm (rain or shine). This year's event features live entertainment by The Ridgeville Band (1-2 pm), Kevin Kelly's Magic Show (2-3 pm) and face painting for kids throughout the entire three hours. The Dawes House will be open for self-guided tours, including the exhibit "Evanston Ties the Knot," a showcase of wedding fashions and customs. Treats will be provided by Andy's Frozen Custard. The crowd-pleasing Garden Chef Series returns to the Chicago Botanic Garden for another growing season full of cooking demonstrations by noted area chefs using the freshest fruits, herbs and vegetables. The free events take place at 1:30 and 2:30 pm each Saturday and Sunday through October 4 in the Regenstein Fruit & Vegetable Garden. Amphitheater seating, surrounded by lush garden beds, affords a pleasant view of the open-air kitchen. Seating is provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Sun protection is recommended. Some July highlights include North Shore's own Nicole Pederson (July 25) from Found Kitchen and Social House, and Nell Funk (July 26) from Now We're Cookin'. For more information, click here.

The founders, with assistance from the public at large, have compiled a list of the most unusual, hidden, secret, or otherwise amazing places in the entire world, and the American Toby Jug Museum in Evanston is one of them! This month, Toby Jug is included as part of Atlas Obscura's "must see" places, with a special tour on Saturday, July 18th. If you haven't visited the museum, now is the time. With more than 8,000 character and Toby jugs from 30 different countries, the world's largest collection is right in your own backyard!
