Chicago Botanic Garden's northernmost lake is the focal point of an exciting new garden and plaza called the Esplanade. The nearly three-acre garden greets visitors as they cross the cedar footbridge from the Visitors Center to the Main Island. The Esplanade's unique landscape provides sun-kissed views of the lake, as well as dramatic fountains, waterspouts and pools. This summer, the Esplanade's annual beds burst with petunias, geraniums, begonias, verbena and more, dressed in scarlet, pink, red, white, lavender and peach. Conceived by one of the greatest landscape architects of the 20th century, Dan Kiley (1912-2004) and designed by colleague Peter Morrow Meyer, the Esplanade is destined to become one of the Garden's most popular public spaces.
