Since 1973, the City of Evanston has presented the annual Evanston Lakeshore Arts Festival, which returns to Dawes Park this year. The festival, which runs from 11 am to 6 pm each day, showcases fine art by over 100 artisans in 11 different categories, as well as a variety of music including live jazz, blues, folk, bluegrass, rock, baroque and indie pop music. There's also a silent auction, the very popular Children's Craft tent, and eleven restaurateurs serving up a variety of culinary delights. Admission is free. The Evanston Lakeshore Arts Festival is presented by the City of Evanston's Cultural Arts Program Division. For more information, click here.

After exploring the museum's galleries and interactive youth exhibition, families can enjoy a visit from the ice cream truck at noon. Recommended for ages 4-14. There's no better way to enjoy a Tuesday evening than at the Chicago Botanic Garden's Music on the Esplanade (6 to 8 pm). Bring a chair, pack a picnic, sit back, and relax with a variety of performances from Spanish guitar to jazz to big band artists. Light fare and beverages are also available for purchase. The August line-up includes classic Rock 'n Roll with the Saturday June Band (8/4), Spanish guitarists Fernandez & Kimball (8/11), Latin/Caribbean music with Callaloo (8/18), and jazz with the Nia Quintet (8/25). Now in its 7th year, the Evanston History Center's walking tours are in full gear! On Saturday, August 1, come explore the revolutionary history of Evanston's women by viewing the houses and buildings where they worked to transform the city's cultural landscape. On Saturday, August 15, you'll discover the rich, varied history of Evanston's lakefront! From lifesaving stations to shipwrecks, from boathouses to warehouses, from parks and private residences to piers, beaches and landscaping; the stories are as varied as the lakefront itself. Come experience the latest in carnival rides, kids' games, family friendly activities, nightly raffle drawings and so much more at Northbrook Days, now in its 91st year! This year's live music line-up includes the Gina Glocksen Band (Wednesday, 8/5), an ABBA Salute (Thursday, 8/6), Hillbilly Rockstarz (Friday, 8/7), Mr. Blotto (Saturday, 8/8) and The Associates (Sunday, 8/9). Be sure to come hungry, as there are plenty of food vendors, as well as a beer and wine garden. As always, Northbrook Days offers free admission, free parking and free entertainment! If you haven't been out there yet, there's one Thursday left (August 6) featuring the Sam Fazio Quartet, so get your dancing shoes on and c'mon out for a great time on the dance floor! One of Chicago's most beloved plays, Bleacher Bums takes place in the bleachers of Wrigley Field as die hard Cub fans "root, root, root" for their home team. The group includes a rabid cheerleader, a blind man who follows the game by transistor radio, a bathing beauty, a nerd, and various other bleacher denizens. As the game proceeds, they bet among themselves on every conceivable event, go out for frosty malts or beers, some try to pick up the bathing beauty and, occasionally, they watch the game. Situated in the charming Glen Town Center, Art at the Glen offers extraordinary artwork of all mediums, including ceramics, fiber, furniture, glass, jewelry, metal, mixed media, paintings, drawings, photography and wood. Festival-goers will also have the opportunity to see the masters at work with interactive art demos taking place all weekend long! Live music and great food from neighboring restaurants add to the experience of this free outdoor festival, which runs from 10 am to 6 pm each day. In the open area near Evening Island, come experience soaring stunt-kite performances set to music by members of the Chicago Fire Kite Team and members of the Kite Society of Wisconsin & Illinois. These high-flying professionals demonstrate awesome feats of beauty and great skill. The Chicago Fire Kite Team has been competing and demonstrating team sport kite ballet and precision since 1986. Invited to kite festivals around the world, they have flown in front of friendly crowds in England, France, Japan, and Canada, as well as the United States. Ice cream, beverages, and many lunch options will be available for purchase on the West Meadow. You can walk or take the free tram to the Festival, which runs from 10 am to 3 pm. Northwestern Athletics will host its inaugural Movie Night at Ryan Field. Enjoy a free showing of Big Hero 6! From Walt Disney Animation Studios, the team behind "Frozen" and "Wreck-It Ralph," "Big Hero 6," is an action-packed comedy-adventure about the special bond that develops between Baymax, a plus-sized inflatable robot, and prodigy Hiro Hamada. Free popcorn and drinks. Bring your blankets and sit on the field. Both parking and admission will be free on August 13, and complimentary popcorn and Coca-Cola beverages will be provided for fans of all ages. The Pulitzer Prize-winning musical romance centers on a group of American sailors and Navy nurses stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. Arkansas native Nellie Forbush befriends and quickly falls for Emile de Becque, a French expatriate and plantation owner, and Lt. Joe Cable finds himself in a passionate affair with Liat, the young daughter of Bloody Mary, the local grass-skirt peddler. As the war against Japan escalates, reality sets in for both Forbush and Cable, who struggle to reconcile their unconventional love affairs with their long-held prejudices and insecurities. Winner of 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, some of the most memorable songs include Some Enchanted Evening, Bali Ha'i, There is Nothin' Like a Dame and Younger than Springtime. Since 1904, Ravinia Festival Association has been Chicago's "sound of summer," a place where you can meet up with your friends, have a wonderful time, and hear some of the greatest music in the world. This month is no exception, as some of the biggest names in music make their way to the Ravinia stage including Harry Connick, Jr. (8/7), Ramsey Lewis (8/8), Diana Krall (8/9), Seth MacFarlane (8/21), Chicago (8/22 and 8/23), ZZ Top (8/27), Little Big Town (8/28), Santana (8/29 and 8/30) and Alan Jackson (8/31). Skokie's Backlot Bash will once again offer area residents an action-packed downtown summer street festival! Throughout the three days, Backlot Bash will host more than 15 hours of free live music on a main stage located on Oakton Avenue near the Village Hall, featuring regional and national acts including the Fabulous Thunderbirds, the Psychedelic Furs and Tributosaurus (recreating the sound of The CARS). The event will also feature an amusement park/carnival, a 5K Run, free family programming at the historic Skokie Theatre, a car show, a business expo, a sidewalk sale, fun teen activities, bingo, food, beer and more! The name "Backlot" pays tribute to downtown Skokie's heritage as a major silent film industry back lot set between 1907 and 1915. For more information and a complete schedule of events, click here.
