This month, for the very first time, parents throughout Illinois will enjoy a very exciting sales tax holiday on their back-to-school purchases! From Friday, August 6 - Sunday, August 15, the State of Illinois is offering a tax discount of 5% on a variety of school supplies including paper, binders, pens, pencils, crayons, rulers, chalk, tape and glue. Clothing that costs less than $100 per item (such as shoes, outerwear, uniforms, gloves, hats and mittens) are also eligible. Since 1973, the City of Evanston has presented the annual Evanston Lakeshore Arts Festival, which takes place on the city's stunning, historic lakefront at Dawes Park. The festival showcases live jazz and classical music, a silent art auction, and the popular Children's Craft Tent. It also hosts a dozen restaurateurs serving a variety of culinary delights. Free parking is available at the Northwestern University parking lot, which is three blocks north of the festival site (be sure to look for the signs). A free shuttle bus runs non-stop between the parking lot and the festival site from 8 am to 7 pm (the festival takes place from 11 am to 6 pm each day). Click here for more information.

In the open area near Evening Island, come enjoy soaring stunt kite performances by members of the Chicago Fire Kite Team and members of the Kite Society of Wisconsin & Illinois, all set to music. Participants may bring and fly their own kites in the designated "Kite Festival" area between performances. Kids (big and little) can also make their own paper kites at workshops throughout the weekend (11 am - 2 pm). Kites will also be available for purchase at the Gift of Wings booth. The free Kids' Mad Dash rewards the first kids to get their kites built and in the air. The festival takes place from 11am - 4 pm each day. For more information click here.

The exhibit includes The Itsy Bitsy Spider Rain Garden, A Happy Healthy House, Would You Believe It Comes From a Tree, The Ranger's Station, Go Fish, Drink Up, and The Campsite. Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race examines how the Nazi leadership, in collaboration with individuals in the professions traditionally charged with healing and the public good, used science to help legitimize persecution, murder, and ultimately genocide. Produced by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, Deadly Medicine depicts the role of science in Nazi ideology. Since its smash debut in 2007, Skokie's Backlot Bash will once again offer area residents an action-packed downtown summer street festival! Complete with more than 15 hours of free live music including regional and national acts, the event also features an amusement park/carnival, a 5K Run, silent movies at the historic Skokie Theatre, a classic auto show, a business expo and sidewalk sale, fun teen activities, BINGO, food, beer, and more! The name "Backlot" pays tribute to downtown Skokie's heritage as a major silent film industry back lot set between 1907 and 1915. The event is a collaboration between the Independent Merchants of Downtown Skokie (IMODS), the Skokie Park District, The Village of Skokie and the Skokie Chamber of Commerce. This year marks the 26th anniversary of the acclaimed American Craft Exposition, one of the most renowned craft shows in the nation. Sponsored by the Auxiliary of NorthShore University HealthSystem at Evanston and Glenbrook Hospitals, this prestigious exposition showcases the work of 150 of the finest craftspeople from across the United States including one-of-a-kind pieces, museum-quality collections, and uniquely creative artwork. All proceeds from the event benefit breast and ovarian cancer research at NorthShore University HealthSystem. Hours are Friday 10 am to 8 pm, Saturday 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday 11 am to 5 pm.
